July 22, 2008: Westchester County Clerk Tim Idoni reminds plumbers and electricians seeking a license to perform work here in Westchester that applications to take required licensing exams on September 20th must be received in his office no later than August 20th. Applications can be obtained by visiting the Office of the Westchester County Clerk in White Plains or at http://www.westchesterclerk.com/. No walk-ins will be permitted to take the exams.
Westchester County law requires that plumbers and electricians performing their trade within county borders be licensed. “It’s a law that is strictly enforced for the safety and protection of those who live and work in Westchester,” said Westchester County Clerk Timothy C. Idoni, whose office assists plumbers and electricians who are applying for professional licenses and also provides a complete public listing of these licenses at http://www.westchesterclerk.com/CCResources_P&E.htm . “Our plumbing and electrical boards require trades people who want a Westchester County License to go through a detailed application process, pass an examination, and submit sufficient proof of insurance before a license will be issued or renewed,” continued Idoni who noted the following basic requirements:
· Journey Level Plumber: Application fee of twenty-five dollars ($25) and proof of successful completion of plumbing work under the supervision and employ of a licensed plumber.
· Master Plumber: Application fee of fifty dollars ($50) and proof of five (5) years of experience or apprenticeship in the employ of a licensed master plumber and an additional five (5) years experience as a journey level plumber under the supervision and employ of a licensed master plumber.
· Master/Special Electrician: Application fee of fifty dollars ($50) and proof of eleven and a half (11 ½) years of electrical experience, seven and a half (7 ½) of which must be on the journey level.
Unlicensed plumbers and electricians are urged to seek their licensing without delay. “Don’t risk breaking the law and heavy fines for doing plumbing or electrical work without a Westchester County license,” cautioned Edward Brady of the Trades Licensing Department. “Fines and penalties can run as high as five-thousand dollars ($5,000) a day if you are caught by our Trades Licensing Inspectors performing work in this county without a license.” For more information regarding trades licensing, the application and exam schedule, call 995-2657, email eeb2@westchestergov.com, or visit the Office of the Westchester County Clerk, 110 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. in White Plains between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays.
